What Is the Gospel?

The word gospel simply means good news. So what is the gospel? In 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Paul tells us that the gospel is how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures; and that he was seen of Cephas (Peter), then of the twelve. Paul goes on to point out that he was seen three more times in the following verses, once by a group of witnesses that numbered over five hundred, then by James and all the apostles, and lastly by the apostle Paul himself. Don’t miss the emphasis in Paul’s definition of the gospel that the resurrected Christ was seen!

The gospel is the good news because Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, so we don’t have to. The gospel is the good news because he was buried and rose the third day, according to the scriptures, because we could not. The gospel is the good news because he was seen alive and victorious over sin, death, hell, and the grave so that we can look unto him, the author and finisher of our faith. And the world still needs to see that!
